Infant colic: how to gently and confidently help your baby

Testing Alt

Hi, I'm Federica, a child sleep consultant and founder of With Love Coaching.

I know how challenging colic can be for parents: when the crying seems inconsolable, you feel helpless, tired, and often alone.

The good news is that there are natural and gentle strategies that can help your baby and make your evenings more peaceful 🤍

How common is colic in newborns?

Colic often appears between the second and sixth week of life and can affect up to 20% of newborns.

It generally improves around 3–4 months, but I know how even a few days of intense crying can seem endless.

In those moments, it's easy to feel disoriented or to doubt yourself, but you're not alone. Understanding what's happening and how to act gently is the first step to regaining your balance and confidence 🌷

Treatable causes of colic

Colic can have more than one cause, and often small changes are enough to bring relief.

1. Tongue tie

This can make latching to the breast or bottle difficult, leading the baby to swallow air and causing bloating and discomfort.

2. Gastroesophageal reflux

Often confused with colic: babies arch their backs, cry during or after feedings, and appear agitated.

3. Allergies or intolerances

The most common ones involve cow's milk and soy. In some cases, changes in the mother's diet or hypoallergenic formulas can help.

👉 Remember: if crying is excessive or persistent, it's always important to talk to your pediatrician to rule out specific medical conditions.

Gentle and natural remedies

Every baby is unique, but there are small actions that can make a difference.

🌿 For breastfed babies: it can be helpful to temporarily reduce certain foods in the mother's diet (such as dairy, soy, eggs, gluten, or corn).

🍼 For formula-fed babies: consult your pediatrician to evaluate hypoallergenic formulas.

🍵 Natural herbal teas for newborns: chamomile, fennel, or lemon balm, only if age-appropriate and always on the pediatrician's advice.

🦠 Probiotics: some studies show benefits of Lactobacillus reuteri in reducing colicky symptoms.

🌸 Homeopathy and phytotherapy: if well-advised, they can be a gentle and safe support.

Complementary techniques: acupuncture and acupressure

Some professionals suggest non-invasive approaches like massaging specific points on the tummy or using delicate essential oils (lavender, chamomile) to promote calm and relaxation.

Even simple acupressure techniques, when performed correctly, can help reduce abdominal tension and provide relief.

Little Mattia's story 💛

When I met Mattia, he was only six weeks old and cried desperately almost every evening.

His parents were exhausted and started to feel "wrong" because, compared to other families nearby, their babies slept for hours.

Together we introduced small strategies: a predictable routine, less stimulation from the afternoon onwards, and the use of white noise.

After a few weeks, Mattia was calmer and his parents were more confident.

Every time I think of them, I remember that every child has their own pace, and that with consistency and gentleness, great results can be achieved.

A simple yet effective approach for the most difficult hours

Sometimes it takes very little to change the tone of an evening.

Here are some small tips that I often recommend to the parents I work with:

✨ Turn off the TV and noisy devices.

✨ Dim the lights and create a calm atmosphere.

✨ Use gentle movement and, if desired, a pacifier to comfort.

✨ Take the baby to a quiet room.

✨ Create an evening ritual that signals the arrival of night: a cuddle, a lullaby, a reassuring voice.

These are simple gestures, but repeated every evening they become a language of love that your baby recognizes and that helps them relax.

A message of hope

Colic doesn't last forever.

Even if the days seem endless, soon all of this will just be a memory.

What matters is not feeling alone or judged, but supported.

With listening, gentleness, and concrete strategies, every family can find a bit of serenity.

Every evening a little calmer, every extra smile... these are small steps towards your balance.

And remember: you are doing your best 🤍
