Hi, I'm Federica, sleep consultant and founder of the With Love Method 🤍
I know that the topic of children's sleep is one of the most debated among parents.
Over the years, methods like Cry It Out (or “unmodified extinction”) — where the child is left to cry until they fall asleep — have received much criticism for their harshness and the emotional impact they can have on the child and family.
For many moms and dads, the idea of ignoring their little one's tears is unnatural.
The good news is that sleep doesn't necessarily have to involve rigid methods or painful detachment.
👉 With the With Love Method, we support children with gentleness, presence, and consistency, never leaving them alone.
Why Cry It Out Is So Debated
Cry It Out and its derivatives were born with the intent to foster sleep independence, but they don't always take into account the child's emotional needs.
Let's look at the main variations and what they entail.
😢 Unmodified Extinction (Cry It Out)
Definition: The child is put to bed and left to cry until morning, without intervention.
Objective: To encourage self-soothing.
Criticism: Can compromise emotional security and the attachment bond. Many parents find it too harsh and difficult to sustain.
⏳ Graduated Extinction (Ferber Method or “Controlled Crying”)
Definition: The parent returns at increasing intervals for brief reassurances.
Objective: To foster independence by offering scheduled check-ins.
Criticism: Less drastic than CIO, but still emotionally taxing for both the child and parents.
🪑 Extinction with Presence (also known as “Camping Out”)
Definition: The parent remains in the room but gradually reduces contact and interaction.
Criticism: Can be reassuring, but the reduction of interaction can confuse the child and increase frustration for both.
Gentle Sleep: The Alternative to Cry It Out
Gentle sleep is the approach I prefer and have developed in the With Love Method.
It's a philosophy that combines emotional support with autonomy, without forcing anything.
🌙 With Love Method
Definition: The parent stays close to the child, offers verbal and physical reassurances, and gradually and gently withdraws.
Objective: To help the little one sleep peacefully, always feeling safe.
Advantage: Promotes secure attachment and trust, requires consistency but adapts to most families.
This is the core of my method: guiding the child with presence, empathy, and consistency, while also supporting parents every step of the way.
Crying: A Language to Listen To
Crying is not a whim or manipulation: it's communication.
It's how your child expresses needs, tiredness, or discomfort.
💧 Real needs: hunger, sleepiness, discomfort, or need for contact.
💞 Trust: Responding sensitively reduces stress and strengthens the bond.
🌷 Secure attachment: Children who are listened to develop a foundation of security that helps them grow up more serene and independent.
What Mary Ainsworth Teaches Us
Psychologist Mary Ainsworth, a pioneer in attachment studies, showed that children raised by responsive and sensitive parents develop secure attachment and trust in the world.
The With Love Method stems from this very vision: responding to crying, addressing needs, and guiding the child gradually and with presence, until they are ready to sleep autonomously.
FAQ about Cry It Out and gentle sleep
Does Cry It Out harm children?
There's no evidence that it works for everyone, and it can compromise emotional security if applied rigidly.
Many parents choose gentler alternatives precisely because they want to support their child's bond and emotional well-being.
What alternatives to the Ferber method exist?
Gradual approaches like the With Love Method allow you to guide your child towards independence without prolonged crying, with a constant and reassuring presence.
What is gentle sleep?
It's a way of supporting sleep based on consistency, love, and listening: the child learns to fall asleep peacefully, always feeling welcomed and understood.
Conclusion: There's no need to let them cry
Cry It Out has gained a bad reputation because, although it has helped some families, it remains a rigid method that is not very respectful of a child's emotional needs.
I deeply believe that sleep can be learned through connection, not separation.
With gentler approaches, like the With Love Method, you can teach your little one to fall asleep peacefully, with trust and without trauma.
Every calmer night is a step forward for them… and for you too 🤍
