Are you wondering if this is the right time to start a sleep coaching journey with your baby?
It's a question I get asked very often by families, and I'll tell you right away: there isn't one "right" age for everyone. And above all, there's nothing wrong if you – or your little one – don't feel ready yet.
Sleep coaching, especially when done gently and respectfully, is not a race against time. It's more of a gentle guide, accompanying the child (and parents) step by step, listening to everyone's needs 💛
If you're curious to understand if your baby might be ready for a Sleep Coaching approach, these small reflections can help you clarify your doubts.
Signs that your baby might be ready for sleep coaching:
Age and developmental stage
Your baby is at least 4 and a half months old and has already gone through the famous 4-month sleep regression. This means their sleep cycles are becoming more mature!
Early routines taking shape
You start to notice a certain regularity in daily rhythms, for example:
- morning wake-up time is more or less consistent between 6:30 and 7:30 AM
- bedtime often falls between 6:30 and 7:30 PM
- at least one longer stretch of night sleep (even if it doesn't always happen, you've seen it appear before)
Reassuring bedtime routine
You have a predictable and relaxing evening routine that helps your baby understand it's time to sleep and promotes relaxation for the whole family.
Fairly balanced daytime sleep
Naps happen with some ease, and your baby sleeps an adequate amount of time for their age. Even if naps are short or still require your help, that's perfectly fine!
Pediatrician's approval
The pediatrician has confirmed that your baby can reduce night feedings to 1-2 wake-ups and has given the green light for a sleep coaching approach, in a gentle way and respectful of your little one's pace.
Well-fed and healthy baby
During the day, they eat enough, grow well, and any difficulties (like reflux, allergies, or tension) are under control.
Small successes with gentle techniques
You have already successfully experimented with gentle approaches such as the gradual transition to a different sleep support or containment and movement before sleep.
Everyone on the same page
Those who care for your baby – partner, grandparents, caregivers – share the same approach and expectations regarding sleep.
Your emotional readiness
You feel ready to try, knowing that you can always stop if you feel it becomes too difficult. This is also a very important sign.
When it might be better to wait
There are times when waiting is the most loving choice. You might want to postpone sleep coaching if:
- your baby often wakes up at night for full feedings
- sleep is still very unstable after the 4-month regression
- daycare or a new routine is about to start
- breastfeeding (or bottle-feeding) is still complex
- problems like reflux or digestive discomforts are not fully resolved
- your baby has a very sensitive or hyper-vigilant temperament, and for now, it's more helpful to accommodate their sleep
- you don't feel emotionally ready (and this is as important as your baby's readiness)
A final thought, from one mom to another
Sleep coaching is not a race. It's more like learning to ride a bike: some children find their balance sooner, others need more time. Both paths are normal.
Listen to your instincts, observe your child, and remember that you can always try again later. Sleep won't run away, and the bond you are building is much more important 💛
